One may apply for an "Off-campus or Online Exam" under special circumstances, subject to the approval of the supervisor(s) and the Department Committee.

Exam Date
The exams are scheduled to be held at the end of the semester. The exact date and schedule will be announced separately.

Exam Format and Submission Deadline

NB: Students will be granted "PhD Candidate" status upon passing both the "Candidacy Exam" and the "Proposal Exam".

  • On-campus Exam

Two subjects, 180 minutes each
Students are NOT allowed to refer to any books or references during the exam

  • Off-campus or Online Exam

The exam must be completed before the end of the semester in which the student applies.
The examiners have full discretion over the duration and number of exam questions.
Students will have 5 to 7 days to complete the written exam.
All responses must undergo plagiarism detection via an academic integrity system authorized by the NTNU library (e.g., Turnitin).
The similarity percentage will be reviewed by the examiners as a reference during the online oral exam.
The student will be assigned a specific date for a recorded online oral exam, and the recording will be archived by the department.
The final grade will be ratified by the examiners based on the student's performance in both the written and oral exams.
