I. Development Directions

(1) Under the goals of professionalism and diversity, the Department establishes a cross-regional and interdisciplinary curriculum framework. By recruiting a diverse and experienced faculty, it aims to build a reputation for influential academic research both domestically and internationally. At the same time, maintaining an appropriate student–faculty ratio ensures high teaching quality and allows students to select from a wide range of professional courses.

(2) The Department actively seeks internal and external research projects and funding to strengthen faculty research capacity. Through a solid combination of teaching and research, it has formed two main academic clusters—Culture and Application, and Political Economy and Regional Development—to produce forward-looking and practical research outcomes, fulfill social responsibilities, and cultivate new generations of young researchers.

(3) To enhance students’ global mobility, the Department places great emphasis on foreign language proficiency. Some courses are taught entirely in English, and additional language courses such as Japanese and Korean are offered. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of National Taiwan Normal University’s Malay, Thai, and Vietnamese language courses. Moreover, foreign language certification is set as a graduation requirement to guide students’ learning directions.

(4) To meet national and social development needs and align with key policy directions, the Department actively collaborates with domestic and international academic institutions. Since the 2017 academic year, a Ph.D. program has been established to provide students with advanced academic training while also strengthening undergraduate foundational skills, practical applications, and the independent research capabilities of master’s students.

(5) The Department strives to strengthen international partnerships by establishing exchange agreements with world-renowned universities. It seeks to attract international students and scholars to enhance its global reputation and influence within related academic communities, aspiring to play a leading role in East Asian studies.

(6) Emphasizing local research and community engagement, the Department encourages students to apply their professional knowledge and skills to contribute to society and develop teamwork experience, embodying the ideal of “Global Vision, Local Action.”

The Department’s vision is to focus on various issues within East Asian humanities and social sciences, becoming a major center for regional studies and education. It aims to cultivate students with solid foundational abilities in cultural and applied studies, as well as political economy and regional development.

(1) In the short term, the Department focuses on East Asian culture and application, political economy, and regional development as its main areas. It sets distinct educational objectives for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, and develops a comprehensive curriculum. It also plans to establish research centers on specific themes to advance development in related fields.

(2) In the medium term, the Department plans to establish research laboratories and build various databases using research outcomes. It will nurture professional researchers and cooperate with renowned overseas universities to launch dual-degree programs with mutually recognized courses. Meanwhile, it will continue to publish the well-regarded Journal of Taiwan–East Asian Cultural Studies to integrate research results from multiple disciplines.

(3) In the long term, the Department aspires to become a leading academic institution in Taiwan and the East Asian region.
